Google Earth File: 1945-2005 Sample Set  - (Requires Google Earth (free download). / Instructions for Viewing)

For a global representation of the SPEED data download the four KML files below. These KML files contain a set of data for three types of civil unrest events between 1945-2005. Each of the first three files represents a particular event type: political expression events (demonstrations, marches, symbolic gestures, etc.), politically motivated attacks (assassinations, bombings, suicide attacks, etc.) and state repression (political prosecutions/arrests, intimidations, threats, state initiated attacks against non-insurgent groups, etc.). The last file is simply a map key for this Google Earth map.

Similar to the smaller Google Earth KML file above, the icons are scaled to reflect the intensity of the event, considering such criteria as the number of demonstrators, number killed, the type of weapon used, etc. The icons are temporally and spatially referenced, to the city-day wherever possible. Where there is no spatial referent the centroid of the country is used.

Google Earth File: 1979-2009 Sample Set  - (Requires Google Earth (free download). / Instructions for Viewing)

This Google Earth KML file contains an older set of data (not available on this website) of three types of civil unrest events for five countries for the period between 1979-2008. The countries, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and Sierra Leone, were selected as part of a study of the relationship between natural resources and civil unrest. The events types are political expression events (demonstrations, marches, symbolic gestures, etc.), politically motivated attacks (assassinations, bombings, suicide attacks, etc.) and state repression (political prosecutions/arrests, intimidations, threats, state initiated attacks against non-insurgent groups, etc.). The icons are scaled to reflect the intensity of the event, considering such criteria as the number of demonstrators, number killed, the type of weapon used, etc. The icons are temporally and spatially referenced, to the city-day wherever possible. Where there is no spatial referent the centroid of the country is used.
