Lincoln Symposium
The Lincoln Symposium was an occasional, Chicago-based event. The Center's motivation for initiating it derives from its belief that the vibrancy of American democracy depends on the maintenance of a strong civil society. The crush of competing obligations in modern society makes it difficult for civic leaders to secure the depth of understanding needed to maintain a viable civil sector. The Lincoln Symposium is designed to facilitate this understanding by succinctly providing balanced and informed perspectives on leading public issues in a convenient setting. Attendees will benefit from the insights of a wide range of internationally prominent public intellectuals and policymakers, as well as rich interactions with other civic-minded citizens.
The first annual Lincoln Symposium was held on December 3rd, 2007 at the University Club of Chicago. The rapid emergence of China as a world power is almost unprecedented in modern history. Considering that the implications of China's rapid emergence for the U.S. are both profound and complex, the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research decided to inaugurate its Lincoln Symposium series with a one day event focusing on this topic. The conference dealt with diplomatic, economic and legal issues. The program's speakers were drawn from both China and the US; they included a diverse, respected and distinguished group of government officials, corporate CEO's, lawyers and public intellectuals.
